Because of the increasing number of infections, Switzerland has put Vienna on the list of corona risk areas. As of next Monday, a quarantine obligation will apply to travellers from Vienna, as the news agency Keystone-SDA reported on Friday. In addition to the Austrian capital, the British Virgin Islands, the Czech Republic, and certain areas in France were added to the list.
The current Swiss risk list includes more than 50 countries and territories. The rest of Austria is not affected by the measure. Switzerland only puts more regions, but not the whole country, on the risk list of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). This happens when the corona case numbers exceed the limit of 60 new infections per 100,000 persons, when reliable information is lacking or when repeatedly infected persons have entered Switzerland from the regions. In Vienna, more than 80 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants were recently recorded.
However, people entering Switzerland from border regions – for example in Vorarlberg and Tyrol – are generally exempt from quarantine obligations, even if the number of corona cases is expected to increase. This was decided by the Swiss Federal Council on Friday.
In Switzerland, too, the number of corona cases has been rising continuously since mid-June. Overall, the neighboring country, which has a similar number of inhabitants, has so far recorded more corona infections and deaths than Austria. According to the records of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, around 46,000 infections and 2,000 deaths were reported.
